TSA officers discovered six smoke grenades at Newark Liberty National Airport in a man’s carry-on luggage June 16. The officers found the prohibited items at an airport checkpoint.

While smoke grenades are not necessarily illegal, they are prohibited from being brought onboard airplanes for simple safety precautions. If the grenades were to go off onboard, the cabin, and potentially the cockpit, could fill with smoke and cause serious issues among passengers and crew.

A TSA officer monitoring the X-ray screen identified the man’s bag as needing further inspection and it was pulled off the conveyor belt. Upon closer look, another TSA officer found six smoke grenades neatly bubble wrapped.

“It’s quite shocking that someone thought he could bring them on the plane at all because something like that is not even allowed in a checked bag.” Christopher Murgia, New Jersey deputy federal security director, TSA.

“This is a perfect example of what a fine job our TSA officers do,” Murgia continued. “The officer staffing the X-ray machine spotted something unusual and called for the bag to be opened and inspected. It certainly turned out to be the right call.”

The passenger was able to leave the smoke grenades with a non-traveling companion and continued to his flight to the Dominican Republic.
