Oh, Vienna! Built along the banks of the Danube, this charming city has been the home address of luminaries including Beethoven, Mozart, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss II, Gustav Klimt and Sigmund Freud. It’s still home to opulent waltzes and decadent Sacher torte. Named for its creator, baker Franz Sacher, this rich, iced chocolate cake with its trademark layer of apricot jam can be found in cafés and on dessert menus throughout the city — while it can also be found in other spots around the world, there’s something undeniably delightful about enjoying it here. Try it for yourself at Café Sacher Wien, open daily 8 a.m.–midnight.
But it’s not all about cake: Plan your city tour to include iconic sites such as the St. Stephen’s Cathedral, a medieval masterpiece; Schönbrunn Palace, a 1,441-room former imperial summer address with stunning Baroque interiors; and the towering neo-Gothic Vienna City Hall, built with an estimated 30 million bricks. Elsewhere, the Vienna State Opera, Imperial Treasury, St. Peter’s Church and National Library are open for tours. At the Österreichische Galerie, located within the Belvedere Palace, world-class exhibitions include a vast permanent collection and ongoing temporary exhibits. On view now: “Belvedere Collection & Kiss by Gustav Klimt;” and “Rueland Frueauf the Elder and His Circle.” On the museum grounds, don’t miss “Fat House,” a large-scale sculpture by artist Erwin Wurm. Step inside and listen to a video projection that includes the building arguing with itself on a number of existential topics. Also to keep on your calendar: the March 16 opening of “Keith Haring,” a retrospective of the artist’s works at the Albertina. The exhibition, which will include nearly 100 pieces on loan from private collections and international museums, will be on view until June 24.

Sep 17, 2026High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture
It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
