Saudi Arabian Airlines lists passenger dress codes on its website.
The dress code forbids travelers from wearing clothing that may cause discomfort or offense to other passengers. Saudia is the flag carrier of Saudi Arabia, which follows a conservative interpretation of Islam.
On the passenger code of conduct section of its website, Saudia asks women travelers to wear clothing — which cannot be too thin or too tight — covering their arms and legs, and male travelers are forbidden to wear shorts. The carrier states it may refuse to transport or remove passengers not adhering to the dress code.
Saudia Arabia is one of the few Muslim-majority countries imposing a dress code by law. All women, foreign and local, must wear an abaya — a loose garment covering their clothes — in public places.
The in-flight dress code started a debate online, as some agreed with the new rules while others questioned if the rules apply to the cabin crew. Some users ask how the rules will encourage overseas tourism, since not everyone using the airline is Muslim. Another social media user argued if the airline cares about its passengers, it should provide alternative clothing instead of preventing passengers from traveling. Some believe once tickets are paid for, passengers should be free to do as they please.
How do you feel about the new dress code rules?
