Again named safest city in the world, Tokyo takes first place in the latest The Economist SCI2019 report for the world’s safest cities.

Just one of the Asia-Pacific cities making up six of the top 10, Tokyo is followed by Singapore (second), Osaka (third) and Seoul (tied for eighth). Australian cities Sydney (fifth) and Melbourne (10th) also make the list of winners.

Two European cities joining the ranks include Amsterdam in fourth place and Copenhagen (tied with Seoul for eighth). Two North American cities also join the winner’s circle with Toronto in sixth and Washington, D.C., in seventh place.

Also according to the report, safety is not necessarily related to the global region. For instance,  Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka to the charts because of specific, individual city strengths and not because their geographic location is tied to Asia.

A few themes among the winners, each unique and diverse city shares a commonality of high-scoring digital, health, infrastructure and personal security scores. Meaning these cities have a healthy eco-system across the board.

Each winner also nailed the basic qualifications of a safe city, including easy access to high-quality healthcare, community-based police patrolling or disaster continuity planning, and dedicated cyber-security teams.

Read the full report here and see what other cities made the extensive list.
