ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: With only 20 guestrooms, The Chanler offers a remarkably personalized check-in experience. The concierge personally escorted me to my room, providing a thoughtful tour along the way. The absence of key cards (instead, guests receive actual keys) lends a charming and homey touch to the atmosphere. Built in 1870 as a Newport summer cottage by John Winthrop Chanler, the three short floors, though lacking an elevator, add to the historical charm of the building.
GUEST QUARTERS: My stay in the Georgian Room at The Chanler proved nothing short of extraordinary. Elegantly decorated in period style, the room exuded the opulence of the Golden Age of English furniture, complete with a captivating fireplace and bed hangings adorning the king-sized bed. Three bay windows allowed me to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise over the ocean, cozying up in the two wing chairs. The room’s luxurious features, including a multiheaded shower and a jetted tub, further enhanced my overall experience.
SERVICES/AMENITIES: The Chanler boasts two dining options: The Café and Cara Restaurant. Adjacent to the dining room, a beautiful bar offers a selection of cocktails and appetizers. During the winter holiday season the hotel adds a delightful touch with a hot chocolate bar on the terrace, inviting guests to enjoy their drinks by the firepit or partake in a leisurely winter stroll along scenic Cliff Walk. Positioned directly on Newport’s Cliff Walk, the hotel provides convenient access to Easton’s Beach and historical mansions like The Breakers.
TOP TAKEAWAYS:
- The limited number of guestrooms contributes to an intimate and exclusive experience, ensuring personalized attention and service.
- The Chanler’s origin as an 1870 summer cottage adds a unique historical charm, evident in its architecture and overall ambience.
- The Georgian Room, with its period-appropriate décor and luxurious amenities, provides a truly elegant and memorable stay.
