Regulations and Changes for Cuba Tourism

After the Trump Administration issued an all-encompassing Cuba travel warning, travel brands released responses on how they will continue with tourism to the area in the future.

The U.S. State Department stated it “warns U.S. citizens not to travel to Cuba.” The warning is in response to alleged attacks against U.S. Embassy Havana employees. According to Arne Sorenson, CEO, Marriott, “The Trump Administration would prefer to close the door on all U.S. citizen travel to Cuba,” as opposed to simply limit visits to Cuban hotels.

Due to an Obama-era policy that opened up U.S. travel to the island, Cuba tourism was on the rise. Even after the Trump Administration’s earlier restrictions announced in June, airline and cruise travel remained intact and thriving. The new regulations will apparently be more far-reaching, and travel brands may see immediate effects.

Responses from air and cruise lines have been varied. Companies like JetBlue have announced travel changes and cancellations, while Royal Caribbean Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, American Airlines and AirBnb announced they would not be making many — if any — changes to itineraries or flights. In a statement from Royal Caribbean Cruises, the cruise line expressed, “We do not feel [recent events] pose a risk to our cruise passengers.”
