Scotland in spring can be cool and rainy, but Scotland’s off-season is also less crowded, leaving its cultural events and magical scenery all to yourself.
It is easy to stay warm during cold spring nights with great scotch and gin flowing throughout Scotland, from Hendrick’s Gin Palace distillery on the Ayrshire Coast to North Berwick Gin, an award-winning eco distillery. Or try Johnnie Walker Princes Street in Edinburgh.
In spring there are lots of football games to see (the season runs until mid-May) and culinary festivals to enjoy. The Scottish Vegan Festival is in Edinburgh in early April, while Fynefest is in Cairndow, Argyll, from late May to early June. Other culinary events include Paisley Food and Drink Festival (end of April); Eat & Drink Fest Glasgow (late April); and Springfest: The Scottish Food & Drink Festival, Loch Lomond Shotes (early April). In addition, the castles in Scotland are beautiful in spring, with the most popular being Edinburgh Castle, Dunnottar Castle and Dunrobin Castle.
Then, of course, there is golf. Scotland’s fantastic golf courses offer great views of Scotland’s pristine countryside, especially when there are colorful trees and flowers blooming. Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts is a deluxe collection of restored historic hotels in some of the best golf destinations in Scotland.
A few of its hotels, located close to the courses, include Rusacks St Andrews, the brand’s crown jewel. Rusacks St. Andrews, first property of the collection, is situated along the legendary Old Course in a renovated 1800s building overlooking the first and 18th holes. The property offers 123 rooms. The hotel’s signature restaurant, named 18, has a rooftop bar providing visitors with views of St. Andrews’ Old Course and West Sands Beach, as well as a rooftop putting green.
Marine Troon is a seaside destination hotel with a whimsical, golf-centric atmosphere and unobstructed views of the Ayrshire coast, and the first and 18th fairways of the legendary Royal Troon Golf Club. This year, the historic course hosts the upcoming 152nd Open Championship in July, the 10th Open held in Troon. Visiting in spring treats travelers to uninterrupted views and access to the links before the championship surge.
Opened in August 2023, Dornoch Station overlooks Royal Dornoch Golf Club’s Championship Course and surrounds visitors in the Highland’s rugged and beautiful landscape. Décor reflects a Scottish Highlands and seaside theme, with custom-designed wallpaper, original art and unique lighting installations. Guests usually will leave behind golf balls representing their home courses to create an experience of pilgrimage for players from around the world.
Marine North Berwick inspires guests with its stunning coastal setting and direct views of the West Links at North Berwick Golf Club. The Spa at Marine North Berwick is a tranquil space to enjoy Caudalíe treatments, which combine scientific techniques with active ingredients from its Bordeaux vineyards. The hotel overlooks the 16th hole of the historic West Links course at North Berwick Golf Club and offers scenic views of the Firth of Forth and Bass Rock.

Sep 6, 2024Escape to Tahiti for a Captivating Island-Hopping Cruise
The 118 islands of French Polynesia reveal themselves layer by fascinating layer, with the spirit of mana (vital force) linking them all the way from Tahiti to the remote reaches of the Marquesas. This is part of the world best savored on a journey that dives as deep into culture as natural beauty, both above and below the water’s surface. A cruise makes it easy to cover a lot of ground while unpacking just once (and sneaking in some work done in comfort, too, during at-sea days). And cruising offers particular appeal within this semi-autonomous French territory sprawling across nearly 2 million square miles of ocean and covering five archipelagos.

Sep 4, 2024The Shelbourne Review
Facing the vast St. Stephen’s Green in the heart of Dublin sits the iconic and historic The Shelbourne. Few hotels master the perfect blend of history and luxury, but The Shelbourne gets it right. The site of the signing of the Irish Constitution in 1922 granting the Republic of Ireland its freedom from England, The Shelbourne has hosted its fair share of notable figures, from Michael Collins to Princess Grace Kelly to John Ford, the latter of which was the name of my suite.
