Not only is it the Lunar Year of the Rooster, 2017 has also been declared the Year of Vonnegut — at least in Indianapolis. Eleven of the city’s favorite bars honor popular author and Indianapolis native Kurt Vonnegut with cocktails inspired by his work. Rolling out over 11 weeks, the cocktail celebration will culminate with the grand opening of the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library April 8.

Participating city watering holes include the ball & biscuit, The Libertine, Black Market, Hotel Tango, Spoke & Steele, Plat 99, Dorman Street Saloon, 1933, Thunderbird, Milktooth and Bluebeard — named after one of Vonnegut’s novels. Cheeky drinks by the mixologists at these establishments include a crushed Wheaties sugar rim to honor the novel Breakfast of Champions, and activated charcoal that pays tribute to one of Vonnegut’s more well-known characters, Kilgore Trout. Work up a thirst with a self-guided spin around Vonnegut’s city with stops at a two-story tall mural of the author, his childhood home and buildings designed by the author’s grandfather.
