Qantas announced last year its first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner would fly between Melbourne (MEL) and Los Angeles (LAX) by December of this year. Now, the airline unveiled its new premium-economy seats for those planes.

One of the most notable features is a reclining option that shifts various parts of the seat to support the passenger’s upper body as the seat leans back. The seats also include a redesigned headrest fitted with a specially designed pillow, plus a new footrest design. They’re also about 10 percent wider than the airline’s current premium economy options.

It’s all in the name of comfort, said Alan Joyce, CEO, Qantas, “Our Business Suite has been dubbed ‘mini first class’ by some of our frequent flyers and our economy seat for the Dreamliner has features that some reserve for premium economy. This new premium economy seat has serious wow factor. You have to experience how well it supports you when you recline to realize it’s completely different from anything else in its class.”

These seats sit in a separate cabin with 28 spots and follow the airline’s 2-3-2 layout. The seats will offer HD Panasonic seatback screens 25 percent larger than previous versions. Each seat will also include five storage compartments and two USB charging ports. There’s a shared AC power socket and a personal LED light too.
