Qantas plans to power its Los Angeles-based flights with biofuel starting in 2020. The airline says over the next 10 years it will procure 30 million liters, made from 50 percent renewable jet fuel from non-food plant oils and 50 percent traditional jet fuel.
The airline will use the fuel to operate its flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Melbourne (MEL), and the airline says the biofuel will cut its carbon emissions per gallon in half over its life cycle.
The move follows Qantas’ domestic biofuel trials in 2012. The carrier signed an agreement with U.S.-based biofuels company SG Preston.
Gareth Evans, CEO, Qantas International and Freight, said the initiative allows Qantas to become “the first Australian airline to use renewable jet fuel on an ongoing basis” as part of the carrier’s commitment to lowering carbon emissions across operations.
Michael Gill, director of environment, IATA, also said “Deals such as these are critical to the development of an aviation biofuel sector globally and the achievement of the aviation industry’s climate goals.”
