On Sunday, President Trump issued a travel ban, under which travelers from eight countries — Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen — will face restrictions on entry to the United States.

While some countries face a total ban, others will experience more tailored restrictions. For example the restrictions facing Venezuela only apply to certain government officials and their families.

Trump’s controversial ban on visitors from six Muslim-majority countries expired Sunday — 90 days after it went into effect.

In a statement released Sunday night, the White House called the new restrictions a “critical step toward establishing an immigration system that protects Americans’ safety and security in an era of dangerous terrorism and transnational crime.”

President Trump said, “Following an extensive review by the Department of Homeland Security, we are taking action today to protect the safety and security of the American people by establishing a minimum security baseline for entry into the United States.”

The Department of Homeland Security developed the new baseline requirements based on “accepted international norms, best practices and expert determinations regarding the minimum information the United States needs to validate traveler identities, prevent fraud and ensure individuals do not represent a national security or public-safety threat.”

The ban will go into effect Oct. 18, and officials ensured valid visas will not be revoked.
