Last month, a flight turned around because a passenger insisted he needed a smoke break. The Vistara flight in India was delayed for three hours as the passenger was removed from the plane.

According to the New Indian Express, the flight was preparing for departure from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, on its way to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, when the incident occurred.

Airline officials said a male passenger started smoking while the plane pulled away from the gate. Flight crew told him to stop immediately, as it’s illegal to smoke on domestic flights in India.

The passenger became unruly and refused to stop so the captain called for the plane to turn around and return to the gate. The passenger was removed for noncompliance with air safety rules. The flight was delayed for three hours during the commotion.

“We had an unruly passenger who insisted on smoking on board,” a Vistara spokesperson told New Indian Express. “He was issued a warning letter by the captain and later offloaded when he denied to comply with air safety rules. Vistara regrets the delay.”
