The United States’ travel restrictions are beginning to hit airlines of all kinds and capacities.
Over the weekend, long-haul budget-carrier Norwegian announced plans to cancel about 85 percent of flights and lay off about 7,300 employees. The flight cancellations are planned to ramp up gradually, while layoffs will be a temporary measure.
“What our industry is now facing is unprecedented and critical as we are approaching a scenario where most of our airplanes will be temporarily grounded. Several governments in Europe have already said they will do everything they can to ensure that their airlines can continue to fly when society returns to normalcy,” said Jacob Schram, CEO, Norwegian.
The airline is grounding planes, but promises to work with governments to aid stranded passengers in returning home. The 7,300 workers facing layoffs make up more than 90 percent of the airline’s workforce. Pilots, cabin crew, maintenance and administrative staff are among those laid off.
Officials assure workers and passengers the downshift is temporary, and Norwegian plans to return to normalcy with the rest of the world.
