Travelers hoping to take that long-awaited trip to the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere in the New Year should heed a new requirement for entering the country. As of October 2019, all travelers (even those from visa-waiver countries such as the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom) who visit New Zealand must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority e-Visa, also known as an NZeTA.

Although technically a visa, applying for and obtaining this permission does not require an embassy visit or lengthy paperwork. Instead, visitors simply need to apply at least 72 hours before boarding their flight to New Zealand by completing a form online or through the Immigration New Zealand mobile app. Once approved, the permission links to the traveler’s passport, with validity for up to two years for multiple entries.

The cost for the NZeTA varies depending on how you apply: Online applications cost $7.50 while app submissions cost $5.70 — applicants also must pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, a $22 fee donated to protecting the country’s environment from potential dangers of tourism.
