A new tour from A Classic Tours Collection focuses on the history of female empowerment in Tahiti.

According to A Classic Tours Collection, “During pre-Christian Tahiti, the highest titles in the Society Islands were not assumed by right of patrilineal descent. Women were equal if not superior to men. Rank from a titular succession was inherited from the mother. However, daughters whose fathers were great warriors (hua or toa in Polynesian) would inherit the title since their mothers were low ranking, but sons were not given this privilege.

“…Women’s status changed after the colonization and the advent of the missionaries. They became daughters, wives and mothers. Labor division was created and a Western social way of life took hold where women had their place in society and men were the breadwinners and head of families. Thus, men became superior due to their ability to earn, giving them far great equality over women.”

Tour participants will learn about the female history of Tahiti in an intimate setting led by Debika Sen. The itinerary includes cultural explorations through artwork, song and dance; hands-on experiences like weaving, woodcarving and tattooing; Tahitian cuisine; adventure activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving; and natural wonders that take advantage of the Polynesian landscape.
