The Department of Defense and United Airlines conducted a study that found when masks are worn, there is only a 0.003 percent chance that particles from air travelers can enter a passenger’s breathing space who is sitting beside him/her. DOD and United Airlines ran 300 tests in just over six months with a mannequin on a United aircraft.

For the test, the mannequin was equipped with an aerosol generator and technicians could reproduce breathing and coughing. Each test released 180 million particles, and then the study examined how the particles moved inside the cabin both with a mask on and without a mask. The number of particles released is equivalent to those produced by thousands of coughs. The tests also assumed the flight was completely full, with sensors in seats, galleys and the jet bridge to represent other passengers.

“99.99% of those particles left the interior of the aircraft within six minutes,” Josh Earnest, chief communication officer, United Airlines, told ABC News. “It indicates that being on board an aircraft is the safest indoor public space, because of the unique configuration inside an aircraft that includes aggressive ventilation, lots of airflow.”

Also released last week, the International Air Transport Association released research stating the risk of catching COVID-19 on an airplane is as likely as being struck by lightning. Of 1.2 billion travelers, IATA found 44 published cases of potential in-flight transmission, and most were earlier in the pandemic before the mask requirement.

Embark on Alaskan Adventure Tours from Anchorage

As our four-passenger plane prepared to land on a gravely shoreline in Lake Clark National Park, one of the most remote national parks in the United States, accessible only by plane or boat, my excitement grew. Though the flight was scenic and provided a terrific perspective of the vast expanse of this part of Southcentral Alaska, my fellow passengers and I had one thing on our mind — bears!

Review: Hotel Pennsylvania, New York City

I was staying in New York City with my daughter. We arrived at Penn Station, right across the street from Hotel Pennsylvania, at 9:30 a.m. — way too early to check in. But we had some luggage we didn’t want to carry around with us, so we stopped at the hotel to leave it.

Mingle with the Locals in Colorado Springs’ Revitalized Ivywild.

On a summer stroll around my friend’s Colorado Springs Ivywild neighborhood, a school building was bustling. Odd, at first sight, as it was summer, and school was clearly not in session. But upon further inquiry, I learned the former Ivywild Elementary School, closed in 2009, had been completely reimagined as part of a Colorado Springs Urban Renewal Authority project.
