The death toll from Saturday’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal and the Kathmandu Valley region increased to more than 3,700, with thousands more injured.

The strongest earthquake to hit the country in 80 years and at least 15 aftershocks ranging from magnitude 5 to 6.6 caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure across Nepal, Tibet, Bangladesh and at the Nepal-China Border. Tremors were felt as far away as Lahore, Pakistan; Lhasa, Tibet; and Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Relief groups from the United States, Israel, Japan, Australia and New Zealand are headed to the country of 28 million people to contribute to rescue efforts. Government agencies and aid groups continue to send doctors, volunteers and equipment to the country following the reopening of Katmandu’s international airport (KTM).

“We do not yet know the scope of damage, but no doubt this is the most deadly and devastating earthquake since the 1934 tremor which devastated Nepal and Bihar,” said Jagan Chapagain, director, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. “People will need considerable support including food, water, medical care and emergency shelter.”
