Capturing the authentic soul of the Black Forest in southern Germany is Nagold, a town home to castle ruins, half-timbered houses, welcoming locals and more. Learn why this quaint village is a must-visit within Germany’s Black Forest region:
Hohennagold Castle
Located atop a hill overlooking the town, this medieval castle dates back to the 12th century. The castle is situated on the site of an earlier fortification built by an uncle of Charlemagne. Today, visitors can see the ruins and take a hike through the surrounding nature reserve. The castle grounds also host various events year-round. Other historic sites in and around Nagold include a Celtic burial ground called Krautbühl, dating back 2,500 years ago during the Hallstatt or early La Tène period. The oldest church in the area is Remigius Church, a predominantly Gothic church with origins dating back to 773 A.D.

Unique Festivals
Nagold hosts various events and festivals throughout the year. In addition to a Celtic festival (Fun fact: The Celts were the ones who named the nearby river Nagold, meaning “flowing stretch of water”), the town features a midsummer festival, garden show, theater performances and food markets. And between October and March 2026, the town will host diverse classical music concerts with top-notch regional musicians.
“Small Town” Pearls
Nagold has been recognized as one of Baden-Württemberg’s Kleinstadtperlen (“Small Town” Pearls) because of its historic town center with narrow lanes, boutique shops and cozy cafés. There’s also a museum covering the history of Nagold, gardens and parks, and more.
Nature Lover’s Paradise
Hikers and cyclists love Nagold, and for good reason. The Seven Hills Trail, Nagold Valley Cycle Path and newly opened Mörike Trail draw visitors and locals year-round. The Mörike Trail traverses through “lost places” and historical landmarks, allowing hikers to see more of the region.

Enchanting Christmas Market
On the second week of Advent (Dec. 5–7), the town transforms its market square into a winter wonderland with more than 80 beautifully decorated huts, mulled wine and roasted almonds. Additionally, from Easter to October, a little train winds through the park to delight children.
Easy Access from Major Cities
Of course, getting to a small town in a different country can seem daunting when factoring in transportation, but Nagold sits within easy reach of cities like Stuttgart and Tübingen. It also serves as a strategic gateway to the Black Forest.

Blending with its Montrose neighborhood like the indigenous and cultivated plants hugging the property’s walkways, the newly built Hotel Saint Augustine opened mid-January 2025. The first Bunkhouse hotel in Houston, Texas, is easily mistaken for garden apartments. Seventy-one guest rooms and suites encompass a tree-lined block. The hotel’s buildings are only two stories tall and also house a lobby, lounge, restaurant and event space. Tucked into a corner of the grounds sits a circular outdoor pool.
