Attention cranky airline gate agents: We have seen the future and you’re not in it.

Miami International Airport has teamed with SITA, an air transport IT provider, to roll out new technology designed to streamline the airport experience. The seven-year deal, part of MIA’s $6.4 billion capital improvement project, will test cutting-edge passenger technologies to study self-serve options that could include self-boarding gates and smartphone-connected technology to expedite passenger movement through airport checkpoints.

As part of the deal, MIA will be the first airport in North America to have the passenger-processing platform, SITA AirportConnect Open, deployed in a virtual environment, across the entire airport. In total, SITA’s advanced technology will run more than 750 workstations and 60 common-use self-service kiosks.
