Foreign travelers headed into Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport may find some welcome changes at customs aimed at making things easier.
The airport is in a testing phase to streamline the process of entering the country and having one’s bags scanned. Passengers have long been subject to a red light-green light scenario that involved pushing a button to determine if your bags would be subject to additional searches.
Now, bags will be checked through a mobile x-ray device as they move from the airplane to the airport. This step eliminates the lines that form at customs.
Declaration forms are also being eliminated, which should also help with the efficiency of processing travelers through customs.
Overall, the aim is to make things easier on travelers at what can be a congested airport. Mexico in 2016 saw a 4.1 percent increase in visitors, and many pass through Benito Juarez.
The pilot phase is currently in use at the airport’s Terminal 2, with gradual integration expected for Terminal 1. Then, it will likely be deployed at airports around the country, including Los Cabos (SJD), Guadalajara (GDL), Monterrey (MTY) and Cancun (CUN).
