As of last month, Massachusetts officials implemented stringent background checks on tens of thousands of drivers working for ride-hailing companies Uber and Lyft.
Officials claim these checks are the strictest in the country. They’ve been implemented in part to eliminate any registered sex offenders from driving for the two companies.
The move comes as part of an agreement between Uber, Lyft and Massachusetts government officials. The two companies must now perform multi-state criminal and driving checks for each driver and check them against a national sex offender registry.
State officials will also check each driver for entry in the state’s criminal, sex offender and motor vehicle registries. Any employee who fails the background checks is automatically disqualified from driving for either company.
The move comes after several drivers in the state have been charged with rape, sexual assault and assault with intent to murder.
