Lyft takes advantage of Uber’s rash of controversies, and its ridership increases.
Twice as many Americans hailed a ride from Lyft in 2017 than in 2016, helping to build brand awareness over rival ride-sharing company Uber.
Lyft reported completing 375.5 million rides in the United States and Toronto in 2017, up from 162.6 million in 2016. Toronto, the company’s first international market, was added last year.
Lyft’s customers increased from 12 million to 23 million, 2016–2017, and the number of Lyft drivers doubled, reaching 1.4 million. The company’s operations reach 95 percent of the U.S. population.
“I’ve been at Lyft five years, and every year is bigger and more exciting than the last, but 2017 really felt different,” said Woody Hartman, vice president of operations, Lyft. “It felt like the year in which the public really got to know us for our mission and our values and that led us to bring a bunch of new passengers and drivers onto the platform and achieve the kind of growth that we did.”
Market leader Uber, which hasn’t released 2017 data, struggled with numerous problems including a consumer boycott and the removal of its CEO. The company does still lead the ride-hailing market, providing 4 billion rides around the world in 2017.
