Checked bags are the ire of nearly every passenger on a trip lasting more than a few days, whether you’re bemoaning the cost or the tussle at the carousel to claim them. And good luck if they end up missing or damaged.

Lufthansa is looking to change that experience, starting with rolling out digital bag tags. The tag allows the airline to track your bag’s location, which you can access via an app. You’ll get a notification immediately when you land if your bag didn’t make it to your destination, so you can input where it should be delivered and avoid waiting at the carousel to fill out a form after standing in the lost and found line.

And what if your bag goes missing entirely? Lufthansa will offer “instant compensation” via the app, which allows you to request compensation for the missing bag, along with delayed flights and other inconveniences. All of this will roll out this year.

The airline is partnering with German luggage company Rimowa to include the tag in the bag itself, doing away with the sticker tags altogether. Passengers without these bags can print tags at home and pick up a special RFID-equipped holder at the airport.

And finally, Lufthansa is going to make it easier to drop off your bag at hub airports Munich (MUC), Frankfurt (FRA) and Dusseldorf (DUS). You’ll be able to drop bags at self-serve kiosks, reducing the processing time by more than 70 percent.
