Offering superlative course-side accommodations at New Zealand’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, the Lodge at Kinloch opened its doors in October on the shores of Lake Taupo on the North Island. Internationally known architect-designer Andrew Patterson of Patterson Associates created a modern version of the lodge’s namesake Kinloch castle in Scotland, while Virginia Fisher created interior spaces featuring vast log fireplaces, furnished terraces and decadent marble bathrooms. With deep comfort high on the priority list, Fisher also incorporated plush elements such as goat fur, burnt wood flooring, velvet, brass and copper into the lodge’s spaces.
Accommodation choices range from suites to villas. The lodge’s fine-dining restaurant integrates the principal of Estate to Plate organics, utilizing produce grown onsite. World-class New Zealand wines round out the menu. Elsewhere on the property an infinity pool, fitness center and tennis courts provide plenty of non-golf activities, while nearby diversions include waterskiing on the lake, winter skiing in Tongariro Park, hiking the Tongariro Crossing, trout fishing and touring local geysers and the gurgling muds at Rotorua. The lodge spa specializes in sports therapy and a range of organic treatments. Full meeting and event facilities are also available.

Oct 7, 2026Review: Prestige Oceanfront Resort
Vancouver Island gets progressively wilder as you leave Victoria behind and follow the coastline west. By the time you reach Sooke, about 45 minutes from the provincial capital, city blocks have surrendered to forests, rocky shoreline, sheltered coves and long views across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Prestige Oceanfront Resort rises directly above Sooke Harbour, where boats move across the basin, and the Olympic Mountains form the horizon beyond the strait.

Sep 30, 2026Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley
Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
