Global Traveler: Since June 2007, Starwood has opened or announced expansion plans for more than 20 new hotels in Latin America. Which Starwood brand has the strongest relationship with business travelers?
Trip Barrett: We are very excited about our growth, particularly because it includes not only Starwood brands with an existing presence in Latin America — Westin, Sheraton, W, Le Meridien and Four Points by Sheraton — but also two brands we are introducing in the region, our flagship St. Regis Hotels and Aloft, our newest hotel offering. With nearly 30 hotels and resorts in 11 Latin American countries, Sheraton has enjoyed a long and successful history with business and leisure travelers alike. A significant percentage or our business travel guests extend their stays at one of our many resort hotels, and a lot of them return with family or friends for longer vacations.
GT: With several luxury properties in Mexico, do you see Starwood gaining market share in the region?
TB: Definitely. In fact, we are committed to introducing even more luxury properties in Latin America. We recently opened the St. Regis Punta Mita and in May 2009 will introduce the St. Regis Mexico City. We have also recently announced plans for the St. Regis Kanai, Riviera Maya.
GT: Our readers have always had a high regard for Sheraton Latin America. With the tourism industry working harder to lure customers to their locations, how do you plan to bring more premium travelers to Starwood Latin America properties and keep brand loyalty?
TB: Starwood customers are very loyal. Sheraton appeals to travelers who appreciate familiarity and continuity in quality, services and amenities. We are rolling out the Link@Sheraton experience with Microsoft in all our Sheraton properties. Recognizing the growing demand for ways to stay in shape while on the road, we are updating our Sheraton fitness centers with state-of-the-art equipment and individualized programming developed in partnership with Core Performance. For our most discerning guests, we offer the Club Floor with a full range of personalized amenities and services in addition to access to the Club Lounge, where breakfast and afternoon hors d’oeuvres and beverages are served daily.
GT: Your career has allowed you to live all over the world. What do you enjoy most about working with this market?
TB: I enjoy the warmth, hospitality, passion and blending of cultures in each of the countries in Latin America. I don’t just do business with people, I get to know them and build relationships which last for years. Since I lived in many of the countries before joining Starwood Latin America, I can stay connected with close friends while on the road for business. And the fantastic variety of cultural and culinary offerings, which vary from country to country, makes each visit all the more interesting.
