New York’s LaGuardia Airport is building an AirTrain rail link to midtown Manhattan. The line will soon have its environmental review, a critical next step in the process.

The proposed line will transport travelers from the Willets Point station of the Long Island Rail Road and the New York subway system to the airport. Passengers at LaGuardia would be able to take the LIRR to or from the city’s Penn Station or the 7 Subway train to or from Grand Central Station to link to the AirTrain. It’s estimated a one-way trip would take 30 minutes.

The proposed track would be elevated and follow the course of Grand Central Parkway, along the edge of Citi Field where the New York Mets play. It would avoid acquisition of private land.

The proposal says the train would help ease congestion on roads by bringing around 6.6–10 million passengers to and from the airport in the first few years of operation. That number could grow to 12 million by 2045.

The area’s other two airports, John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, already have trains to Manhattan.
