JetBlue founder David Neeleman hatched a plan to start a new low-cost airline for the United States.
The carrier, called Moxy, hopes to use $100 million in startup funding to run fuel-efficient Bombardier CS300 planes at smaller, low-cost airports near major cities, like New York City, Chicago and Baltimore.
Moxy begins service in 2020 and plans to have all 60 planes received by 2024. Airbus recently bought a majority stake in Bombardier’s C Series Aircraft Limited Partnership. That deal is expected to close this month.
Airline Weekly reported Moxy will sell only point-to-point flights, keeping costs low. The airline will likely operate more like JetBlue than Spirit Airlines, with free WiFi and other perks.
Neeleman has been active in starting airlines in the past, beyond JetBlue. After founding Brazilian airline Azul in 2008, he’s also an investor in TAP Air Portugal.
