Sept. 20, 2018, marked JetBlue’s first-ever flight fueled by renewable jet fuel. Renewable jet fuel is approved by the Federal Aviation Administration as safe to use and the chemical equivalent to conventional jet-A fuel — offering no difference in performance or safety.
The blended fuel, certified by Air BP and provided by Airbus, consists of 15.5 percent renewable jet fuel blended with traditional jet-engine fuel.
Thousands of commercial flights have used some sort of blended renewable fuel in recent years, and four more A321 aircrafts are to be delivered to JetBlue by the end of the year — all stocked with renewable fuel.
As an aviation industry-wide goal to cap greenhouse gas growth in the next few years and onward, renewable jet fuel is a key feature in JetBlue’s plan of action. In order to reduce emissions in coming years, and for the foreseeable future, JetBlue signed an agreement in 2016 with SJ Preston for renewable jet fuel at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
