This year, UNESCO added 25 new locations to its World Heritage List, including Aalto Works in Finland, System of Italian-Style Condominio Theaters in Central Italy, and a historic Buddhist temple complex in Thailand.

In Nakhon Si Thammarat Province in Thailand, on a narrow ridge between the Indian and Pacific oceans, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan has been a massive regional Buddhist center since it was founded in the eighth century. The site was influenced by many architectural and religious traditions, including Hinduism, Brahmanism, Mahayana Buddhism and Theravada Buddhism, evidenced in its buildings, rituals and cultural traditions.

The monastery’s history and expressions greatly influenced communities throughout Thailand and across Southeast Asia, with local traditions continuing at the monastery for more than 1,500 years, including the Nakhon Si Thammarat chronicle tradition, an annual cloth-wrapping ceremony for the Great Reliquary and the Nora dance drama.

UNESCO also listed 10 Italian-style condominio theaters built between the mid-18^th and late 19^th centuries across Emilia Romagna, Umbria and Marche in central Italy. These theaters present preserved examples of Neoclassicism with Late Baroque features, visible in its tiered boxes, carefully designed auditoriums, stalls, foyers, ridotti and historic stage machinery. The condominio system is a collective ownership of public and private financing that allowed private citizens and municipalities to collaborate in creating theaters in small- and medium-sized towns, fostering the growth of a widespread cultural network.

In Emilia Romagna, for instance, Teatro Mariani is believed to be Italy’s oldest surviving wooden theater. Theaters like this one are situated in the heart of historic town centers, serving as important civic meeting places, hosting performances and public events, and contributing to the formation of public opinion.

Other sites added to the World Heritage List include the ancient capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara in Japan; the beaches of the D-Day Landings in Normandy, France; the ancient city of Sebastia, Palestine; Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Florida and southeastern Georgia, United States; and the cemetery complexes of the Xiongnu Nobility in Mongolia.
