Last month, United States transport officials approved airlines in Indonesia for flights to America for the first time since 2007. Airline safety regulators came to the conclusion the aviation sector in Indonesia meets international standards and subsequently upgraded the country’s safety rating. That’s a change from nearly 10 years ago, when the Federal Aviation Administration banned all flights from Indonesia due to a downgraded safety rating. The European Union imposed similar restrictions in 2007, but those have been lifted. The restrictions from the United States came on the heels of several accidents, including fatal crashes from Indonesian carrier Garuda. Transportation officials have decided that despite recent accidents, including a fatal crash in 2014 that killed 162, the Indonesian government has properly improved safety protocols. That decision paves the way for direct flights from Indonesia to the United States to resume. Garuda is expected to begin direct flights as early as next year, and other Indonesian airlines reported they’re eager to resume flying to America as well. All Indonesian airlines will be permitted to fly to the United States if approved by the FAA.
