A new study from the U.S. Travel Association projects a decline in both domestic and inbound international travel through the first six months of 2019.

The report comes from the association’s Travel Trends Index. According to this, November 2018 saw a 3 percent growth in year-over-year travel within and to the United States, marking 107 straight months of expansion for domestic and inbound international tourism markets.

Projections from the Leading Travel Index predict inbound international travel growth will slow to 1 percent through May 2019.

“A number of factors — notably rising trade tensions, softening global growth and the increase in the value of the dollar against other currencies throughout 2018 — have the potential to dampen international inbound travel in the near-term,” said David Huether, senior vice president, research, U.S. Travel Association.

During the slowdown, business travel is expected to outpace leisure travel. Domestic travel expansion is also expected to slow to 2.4 percent growth through May.

Recent market volatility could impede the future of the domestic travel sector.

The study, found online, is compiled through the Oxford Economics research firm. The projections are drawn from a number of sources including search and booking data, airline booking data and other data measurements.
