With record rainfall across parts of the western United States and Mexico, Hurricane Hilary left countless towns and cities working to recover and rebuild. Major floods, which saw residents flee, as well as power outages and high winds characterized a powerful storm.
Hurricane Hilary hit Southern California on Sunday as a tropical storm, marking the first time one has hit the state since 1997. The storm disrupted travelers’ plans across Mexico and the western United States. From flights to concerts to sporting events, travelers had to cancel or postpone plans.
United Airlines waived change fees and fare differences Sunday and Monday to and from all Southern California and some Central California airports. Airports like Los Angeles International, Palm Springs International, San Luis Obispo County Regional, John Wayne, San Diego International and Mexico’s Los Cabos International Airport were just some of the airports under travel alerts earlier this week. United Airlines’ waivers apply to new flights departing between Friday (Aug. 25) and Monday (Aug. 28) in the same cabin and between the same cities as the original reservation.
Other airlines like JetBlue also waived change and cancellation fees and fare differences for customers who booked flights on or before Aug. 17 for travel through Los Cabos International Airport Aug. 25–27.
National Parks closed, as well. Death Valley National Park closed its campgrounds Aug. 19–22, but expects to remain at risk of flash floods through Aug. 25. Joshua Tree National Park currently has several road and campground closures in effect and will open pending further assessment. Many roads and facilities remain closed at Mojave National Preserve, and, as of press time, Manzanar National Historic Site remains closed due to flooding.
Sports also suffered from the storm. Major League Soccer postponed games scheduled for Aug. 20 in Carson, California, and Los Angeles. Originally planned for Aug. 20 at 7:30 p.m., the LA Galaxy v. Real Salt Lake in Carson was postponed until Oct. 14. LAFC’s game against the Colorado Rapids in downtown Los Angeles was postponed until today. Aug. 23.
Baseball games scheduled for Aug. 20 have been moved to become split doubleheaders on Aug. 26. Tickets for Aug. 20 games are now good for Aug. 26’s early afternoon games. Schedule changes include:
- The Dodgers now play the Miami Marlins at noon and 6:10 p.m., Aug. 26
- The Angels play the Tampa Bay Rays at 1:07 p.m. and 6:07 p.m., Aug. 26
- The San Diego Padres play the Arizona Diamondbacks at 12:10 p.m. and 5:40 p.m., Aug. 26
