No matter how you look at it, Delta Air Lines wants you to know this past summer was one of its busiest.

Between Memorial and Labor Days, Delta Air Lines broke a number of its own in-house records, including number of flights flown, passengers carried and destinations served, among others. The airline flew nearly 60 million customers, May 24–Sept. 3.

The airline saw its busiest day on record, July 26, when about 662,000 passengers flew Delta.

“It’s nothing short of remarkable what Delta employees have done this summer to take care of Delta’s customers and each other while running a safe and reliable operation,” said Gil West, COO, Delta Air Lines, in a press release. “No matter the challenge — whether that’s record customers, several severe irregular operations and everything in between — the Delta employees have again proven that no one better connects the world.”

Delta mechanics and maintenance workers began preparing for the busy summer by performing preventative maintenance on planes and training to work on planes between flights, increasing reliability over an extended period of time.

Crewmembers overcame a number of natural impediments, the press release from Delta explained. Thunder storms over several Delta hubs, heat waves in Europe and wildfires on the West Coast of the United States made business as usual nearly impossible, but the crews prevailed.

“This summer provided a number of opportunities to test our company processes in real-time and it’s clear the initiatives we’ve put in place are bringing meaningful benefit to our customers,” said Erik Snell, senior vice president, operations and customer center, Delta Air Lines.

“Summer is when Delta’s true spirit shines and our success is because of your hard work,” said Gil. “The incredible performance we saw this summer doesn’t just happen, it takes all 80,000 Delta people to deliver a safe and reliable operation with the authentic care and dedication that you all do so well.”
