Hong Kong was just named the world’s most expensive city for international workers to live, according to a recent Mercer Cost of Living Survey. The survey accounts for cost of living in various cities to help governments and corporations decide how to compensate expatriate employees. Hong Kong rose to the top this year, beating last year’s priciest city of Luanda, Angola. Zurich and Singapore kept their rankings of third and fourth, respectively, and Tokyo is in fifth place, up significantly from last year. Kinshasa ranked sixth, also moving up, followed by Shanghai, Geneva, N’Djamena and Beijing. On the other side of the spectrum, the cheapest cities were Windhoek, Cape Town and Bishkek. To calculate its results, Mercer uses New York City as a base against which to compare the cost of 200 different items in major cities around the globe. For example, Mercer looks at the cost of a two-bedroom apartment or a three-bedroom house, imported beer, a cup of coffee and a movie ticket. The company also released an annual Quality of Living survey earlier this year, which showed the top cities for quality of life are Vienna, Zurich, Auckland, Munich and Vancouver.
