Airport Authority Hong Kong introduced its plans for what it calls an “airport city” this week. SKYCITY is a planned development situated within walking distance from Hong Kong International Airport and is a project the airport authority hopes sets a new precedent for the world’s air hubs. Set on 25 hectares, SKYCITY features shopping, dining, entertainment, hotels and office towers.
“Our vision is to create a new destination that goes far beyond the traditional notion of a shopping mall. Located right next to the airport, SKYCITY aims to capture broad opportunities in tourism and business, while also providing a dynamic lifestyle and family entertainment hub for Hong Kong residents and visitors alike,” said Jack So Chak-kwong, chairman, Airport Authority Hong Kong.
SKYCITY’s development is split into phases, with the first encompassing retail, dining and entertainment venues, as well as hotels offering up to 750 guestrooms. The hotels are slated to open in 2020, with the remainder finishing in 2021. The retail, dining and entertainment venues are expected to extend over more than 195,000 square metres. Invitations for development submissions are issued next month and into early 2017.
The airport currently serves approximately 70 million international and local travellers each year. By 2030, it’s projected the airport serves more than 100 million annually, thanks to a three-runway system and new road links connecting the Pearl River Delta region.
