Hilton Investigates Hacking Claims

Hilton Worldwide is investigating reports claiming credit card information has been exposed in hacks at properties within the Hilton portfolio across the United States.

Cyber-security journalist Brian Krebs recently reported a pattern of fraud involving credit cards has been detected at Hilton hotels. The hack seems to be limited to credit card transactions at point-of-sale registers in restaurants and gift shops at “a large number of Hilton Hotel and franchise properties,” including Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Doubletree, Embassy Suites and Hampton Inn & Suites hotels.

In a statement to NBC News, a spokesperson of Hilton Worldwide responded to the claims, announcing, “Hilton Worldwide is strongly committed to protecting our customers’ credit card information. We have many systems in place and work with some of the top experts in the field to address data security. Unfortunately the possibility of fraudulent credit card activity is all too common for every company in today’s marketplace. We take any potential issue very seriously, and we are looking into this matter.”

According to a report from online news source DC Inno, the hospitality industry is among the most vulnerable sectors to hackers due to the high volume of sensitive cardholder data that passes through them.

“Hotels are low-hanging fruit for cybercriminals and reports of a breach at Hilton is yet another example in a long line of hacked hospitality organizations. To cybercriminals, hotels, motels, casinos, resorts and their ancillary support businesses are like an eternal spring,” said Jason Polancich, founder, SurfWatch Labs, according to DC Inno.

Krebs noted guest reservation systems at the properties do not appear to be impacted and advised the incident may be ongoing.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
