High Altitude Sailing At Ruedi Reservoir Near Aspen Colorado

Mar 10, 2015
Daily

Ruedi Reservoir near the resort town of Aspen — 9,000 feet above sea level — is the setting for a summer sailing experience, hosted by The St. Regis Aspen Resort and Aspen Sailing School. Participating guests self-drive the resort’s turbo-charged Lexus NX down the mountain roads along the Frying Pan River for the hour-long journey to Ruedi’s waters. Once there, professional instructors who have sailed in the America’s Cup lead sailing sessions aboard a 12-foot Sunfish sailboat. The four-hour sailing school includes a lunch break with wine and a gourmet picnic prepared by chef David Viviano including lobster BLTs, apple coleslaw, and heirloom tomato and watermelon salad.

Cost for The St. Regis Sailing Experience begins at $2,000, available with a minimum two-night stay for groups of up to four people. Options include the use of a 24-foot yacht for cruising in the mountain waters. In addition to butler service, the resort also offers St. Regis Rituals including Summer Après Tea with chilled or iced Vosges Haut-Chocolat and Illy coffee, and a daily Champagne sabering at 5:15 p.m. At the end of the day, guests are invited to Shadow Mountain Lounge to settle beside the crackling fireplace and enjoy a nightcap or sweet indulgence. Friday and Saturday evenings from 7–11 p.m., there’s live music from local musicians Boo Coo.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.

One of Hawai’i’s Most Popular (and Controversial) Attractions Being Demolished

If you haven’t actually climbed them, you’ve seen beautiful photos of them at one time or another: Hawai’i’s Stairway to Heaven, located on Oahu. The 3,922-step hike ascends Koolau Mountain Range and has been illegal to hike since 1987. But this has not stopped travelers and locals from doing so, even with a steep fine of $1,000 for trespassing.
