Mar 10, 2015High Altitude Sailing At Ruedi Reservoir Near Aspen Colorado
Ruedi Reservoir near the resort town of Aspen — 9,000 feet above sea level — is the setting for a summer sailing experience, hosted by The St. Regis Aspen Resort and Aspen Sailing School. Participating guests self-drive the resort’s turbo-charged Lexus NX down the mountain roads along the Frying Pan River for the hour-long journey to Ruedi’s waters. Once there, professional instructors who have sailed in the America’s Cup lead sailing sessions aboard a 12-foot Sunfish sailboat. The four-hour sailing school includes a lunch break with wine and a gourmet picnic prepared by chef David Viviano including lobster BLTs, apple coleslaw, and heirloom tomato and watermelon salad.

Life Unplugged
Ten years ago I set sail on a three-day Maine Windjammer cruise. At the time, I was on assignment for a local daily newspaper. I was looking forward to exploring the Maine coast, but thought I’d be bored out of my mind. I packed my cell phone (“packed†is the operative word here; remember, cell phones were big back then) and my laptop (even bigger) figuring I’d get some work done during the cruise. But a funny thing happened. As soon as we set sail from Rockland, Maine, I relaxed. I even took a nap on the first afternoon! It was a late-season cruise; October, I think. The weather was cool, but glorious. We sailed through beautiful passages and anchored overnight in protected coves. We visited tiny fishing villages. And I never once pulled out my laptop or cell phone. I lived in the moment; oblivious to the pressures and concerns of the “real world.†Since then, I’ve become a firm believer in the restorative powers of “unplugging†every now and then. If you haven’t already, give it a try. Walk away from your computer for an hour or a day or a week. There’s a beautiful world out there beyond your keyboard and flat-screen monitor.  - Lisa Matte, Editor-in-chief
