Heathrow announced plans to waive landing fees for a year — worth about £1 million — to encourage the first regular electric-hybrid planes at the airport.
The airport said there are a growing number of electric plane projects taking place around the world, and that electric planes could be in use at major international airports by 2030.
“Heathrow has long been a leader in sustainable aviation. We championed carbon neutral growth in global aviation, which will come into effect in 2020,” said John Holland-Kaye, CEO, Heathrow Airport. “The next frontier is zero carbon flying, and I hope this prize will help to make it a reality at Heathrow by 2030.”
This year, a two-seat electric plane was tested at Oslo Airport. Easyjet also partners with American company Wright Electric, which aims to build an all-electric commercial passenger jet that can fly passengers across Easyjet’s U.K. and European network within a decade.
