In Killorglin, County Kerry, Ireland, Aug. 10–12, the annual Puck Fair ranks as the country’s oldest festival. In Irish, the fair is called Aonach an Phoic, translating to Fair of the He-Goat. Irresistible, right? Festivities begin with the selection of a wild goat by a local goat catcher, who escorts the goat to the town. The Queen of Puck (traditionally a local school girl) crowns him King Puck during a Coronation Parade and Ceremony.
The goat is well cared for, with a veterinarian in attendance throughout. At the end of the festival, the goat is safely returned to his mountain pasture.
Events include a horse fair in Evan’s Field; a First Night Concert featuring the Swing Cats; a Cattle Field; Second Night Concert with The Cosmic Funk Band; Final Night Concert with The Square; and a fireworks finale.
