Planning a spring or summer road trip? Drive into the past along the Harriett Tubman Underground Railroad Byway. Make stops at the historic Underground Railroad’s once-secret locations, which led slaves from Delaware into the freedom of Pennsylvania.
The tourist route is dedicated to Harriet Tubman, a Maryland slave who escaped in 1849. The 98-mile path includes buildings and locations run by “conductors” including Wilmington Quaker Thomas Garrett, and runs north to south. While the actual drive is only three hours, it’s best explored over the course of several days. The route website outlines the significance of each stop, with directions and suggestions for other destinations based on individual interest.
