Inuit culture and Norse history have coalesced into a moving testament to the fascinating history of Greenland. At Nuuk Art Museum in the capital city of Nuuk, Greenland, visitors can explore the country’s rich heritage through a noteworthy collection of carvings in wood, tooth, bone and soapstone. On view: A permanent exhibition of historic works includes pieces by artists Emanuel A. Pedersen (1894-1948), Harald Moltke (1871-1960) and Christine Deichmann (1869-1945). Contemporary artists Miki Jacobsen (1965), Buuti Pedersen (1955), Naja Rosing Asvid (1966) and Anne-Birthe Hove (1951-2012) are also represented.

Also worth a visit, and open by appointment through the museum, The House of Niels Lynge is a time capsule of life in Greenland during the 1950s and 60s, captured in the former home of painter, pastor and poet Niels Lynge. Within the house, Lynge turned the walls into canvases, painting directly on their surfaces and enclosing them with frames — a tactic he famously said would prevent them from ever being stolen. Winter hours are available at the museum’s website, and individual visits can be arranged by appointment in advance through the museum.
