Would you ride in a driverless taxi? General Motors and Lyft are looking to make this technology a reality. The two companies announced plans to begin testing a line of self-driving electric taxis, using the Chevrolet Bolt EV. In January, GM made a $500 million investment in Lyft, raising the company’s valuation to $5.5 billion. Details are still being worked out, according to the Wall Street Journal. The plan right now is for a specific city — yet to be revealed — though users will be able to opt out of the driver-less cars in the Lyft app. In March, the automaker announced plans to acquire Cruise Automation, a San Francisco-based company working on driver-less technology. The deal was reportedly worth more than $1 billion. The news of GM’s interest in driver-less cars comes after companies like Google and Uber began looking into the technology. Some 30 other corporations are also trying to break into driver-less technology. Of course, all of this depends on consumer demand, as well as vehicle safety regulations. Certain states and counties have already said they will allow driver-less cars, but it remains to be seen how widespread this acceptance will be and when the technology will be available.
