Global Wellness Tourism Continues to Grow

Planning to add healthier lifestyles and more travel to your New Year’s resolution list? According to a study from the Global Wellness Institute you can combine the two. The study reported global wellness tourism has grown 14 percent over the last two years, with significant growth in the number of resort and travel company wellness offerings.

From comprehensive wellness spas featuring a range of innovative holistic treatments and state-of-the-art fitness centers to healthier dining options, yoga retreats and visits to natural baths and springs, wellness tourism has become a popular international travel trend across a variety of demographics.

According to a press release from the GWI, wellness tourism revenue grew from $494.1 billion in 2013 to $563.2 billion in 2015, and world travelers made 691 million wellness trips in 2015, 104.4 million more than in 2013. GWI also reported the United States is the largest national wellness tourism market by far, representing more than one-third of global wellness tourism revenues. Other top countries include Germany, France and Japan, and China also made significant gains from 2013 to 2015.

“The Chinese consumer’s appetite for wellness-focused travel is huge and growing, but the current infrastructure for delivering these services and experiences in China at an international standard is still limited,” noted Katherine Johnston, senior research fellow, GWI. “But given the country’s unique wellness ‘assets’ — from TCM and herbal medicine, to energy work and martial arts — there is enormous potential for China to become both an international and domestic wellness tourism destination.”

While the days of hedonistic travel experiences are far from over, wellness tourism is quickly establishing itself around the world as a healthier travel option.
