As if airport fees weren’t frustrating enough, Scotland’s Glasglow Airport is about to take things to a new level.

To combat congestion, the airport is planning to roll out a kiss-and-drop charge to anyone dropping off air travelers at terminals, starting in April. The fee will be based on the length of time drivers remain in the entry area. Drivers staying at least 10 minutes will be charged £2. Those there longer will receive an incrementally higher charge.

The airport will institute the charge after it opens a new pick-up and drop-off facility that will allow drivers to avoid causing congestion at airport entrances.

Similar pick-up charges have been in place at Glasglow Airport for around 10 years, and drop-off fees are common at other airports in the United Kingdom. Still, the fee is not being met with applause; hundreds signed a petition against the fee.

“I appreciate that not everyone will be supportive of the new charging structure, however, we will always continue to provide a free option [in the long-stay car park],” Amanda McMillan, managing director, Glasgow Airport, told the Telegraph.

“We have resisted introducing a drop-off charge despite most airports of our size having similar arrangements in place for many years, however, having exhausted all possible alternatives we have now reached a point whereby a chargeable facility is the only way to address congestion, discourage non-airport traffic and encourage best use of our road network.”
