As part of Germany’s climate package, a plan to reduce emissions, the country will raise departure taxes at German airports. Taxes will go up as much as 60 percent, and are expected to raise up to €740 million. The funds will then be used to lower VAT on rail fares from 19 percent to 7 percent.
The hope is the rate changes will encourage travelers to use trains rather than planes.
The new rates will be:
- €13.03 for flights up to 2,500 kilometers
- €33.01 for flights up to 6,000 kilometers
- €59.43 for the longest flights
Elsewhere in Europe, trains are gaining steam over planes due to the lower environmental impact.
There’s currently not a date released for the start of higher taxes at German airports.
