It’s been a while since an airline ancillary fee has caused so much as a raised eyebrow. Checked bag fees, pay-per-snacks and anteing up for a few extra inches of leg space have become the norm, but a new fee from Lufthansa has grabbed the attention of travel buyers and the Global Business Travel Association.
In June, the Lufthansa Group airlines announced plans to add a surcharge to tickets purchased anywhere other than its websites, service centers and airport ticket counters, effective Sept. 1.
In August, a poll of GBTA members showed 50 percent of travel buyers who currently include Lufthansa in their travel program as a preferred carrier planned to decrease spending with Lufthansa once the fee took effect. In light of the survey, GBTA said the strategy would negatively impact corporate travel programs, calling it a direct price increase to managed travel programs with no corresponding benefit.
While the recent survey looked at U.S. travel buyers, GBTA partners in Europe have found similar results.
