With the official closure of İstanbul’s Ataturk International Airport April 6, focus shifted to building and expanding İstanbul’s new airport, the first phase opened in late October 2018.
Located about 22 miles north of İstanbul proper, İstanbul Airport currently serves as the new home of Turkish Airlines. With a current capacity of 90 million passengers per year, the airport will accommodate up to 200 million passengers on six runways when all four phases are completed — the target date set for 2027. Once complete, the $12 billion airport will encompass 29.5 square miles, making it larger than Manhattan.
Future design plans involve incorporating aspects of Turkish architecture, such as the domed mosques and baths. Travelers who seek a nap during a long layover will be able to book one of the 451 guest pods at Yotel.
