Transport Minister of France Elisabeth Borne announced the introduction of an eco-tax on all airlines flying out of the country.
This added charge will be applied to all companies flying from a French airport, with the exception of flights to Corsica, French overseas departments and territories, and connecting flights.
The new tax will depend on the flight length, destination and ticket class. Depending on the economy-class or business-class ticket, customers will see a significant change in tax.
European Union flights will average about €1.50 tax (approximately $1.68) per economy-class purchase, and business-class tickets will see a €9 charge (around $10.10). The eco-tax will be about €18 euros (about $20.20) for business-class flights outside the European Union.
The new tax is expected to collect about €180 million (around $202 million) by 2020.
The money raised by the tax is intended as an investment in less-polluting transportation solutions and part of the country’s efforts to comply with an environmentally conscious future.
