The Federal Aviation Administration announced it will fine airplane manufacturer Boeing $3.9 million for installing defective parts on around 130 airplanes.
The FAA said Boeing did not prevent the installation of parts that failed strength tests, and the company knowingly submitted the 737 NG planes for final FAA airworthiness certification.
In response, Boeing released a statement that it is “working closely with our customers to take the appropriate corrective actions.” The company has 30 days to pay the fine or challenge it.
The FAA previously said in June that around 300 NG and 737 MAX planes were built with improperly manufactured parts that needed to be replaced immediately. The current fine only applies to the NG airplane components. The FAA said its investigation into the MAX fleet continues.
The defective parts are on the leading edge of the wings, used to guide the movement of the slats, providing additional lift during takeoff and landing. The FAA said a malfunction can cause injury to passengers or prevent a safe arrival.
